Six Things I Wish My Marriage Therapy Clients Knew

  • As a clinician, I care about you and your relationship way more than you think I do. I’m invested and truly want the best for you. Both of you.
  • My job isn’t to tell you who’s right and wrong. Or to referee fights. Instead, my job is to help you learn to navigate those conversations effectively WITH your partner, rather than with me.
  • I will likely make you look your spouse in the eye and repeat to them exactly what you just told me, in front of them. I get it. It’s awkward and everyone hates it. But it’s actually amazingly powerful.
  • This is a very demanding process. You will likely feel worn out, drained, and maybe even sleepy. It’s not all bad, but it does take a lot of energy. I encourage you to schedule your commitments around therapy wisely.
  • Your decision to invest in, work on, and fight for your marriage matters. Not just to the two of you. Your children, families, friends, and community all profit from the energy you commit to working towards growth together.
  • Your courage, tenacity, commitment, patience, and efforts are awe-inspiring. And while you will likely hear these words from me, I want you to know it’s really true. I’m so proud of you.
