4 Assumptions Not to Make in Your Relationship
1. Assume you understood – Because of the emotions involved, we hear our partners through very biased lenses. SO much can be gained from the practice of reflective listening. Next time try this script: “I hear/heard you saying…(provide summary)…” And allow time for your partner to agree, or to clarify.
2. Assume your partner understood – Communication is about understanding. If your partner didn’t understand your meaning, you didn’t communicate effectively. Don’t be afraid to ask: “I’m curious, what did you hear me saying just now?”
3. Assume the worst – Always try to assume the best. And don’t be afraid to ask for clarification!
4. Assume your partner knows what you want– set your partner up for success! Over communicate when you have hopes, expectations or want something from them. Remind them your birthday is coming up, and don’t be afraid to ask for support or attention when you feel alone or needy. How will they know if you don’t tell them?
